On 25 January 2024, a meeting of Category 2 Centres working in engineering was hosted by UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
UNESCO promotes engineering education at secondary and tertiary levels and emphasises the achievements of women and youth in engineering. Priority is given to activities that promote awareness of engineering as a profession and those that demonstrate the importance of young people studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
The meeting was organised by Ashwini Madanayake, Coordinator of UNESCO's Basic Sciences Programmes.
The meeting was organised to establish strong links with other engineering centres, identify joint activities for the biennium, promote action and cooperation in the framework of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD), which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly at the 96th plenary meeting of its 77th session on 25 August 2023, and its implementation under the leadership of UNESCO.
Heads of Category 2 Centres from China, Denmark, Ghana, Ghana and other countries participated in the meeting.
Executive Director of the UNESCO Competence Centre A.V. Kopteva presented the results of the Centre's work - educational programmes, summer schools, scientific projects. V.O. Zyrin, Head of Department, presented the project of unified international competence system for mining engineers.
The UNESCO Competence Centre initiated the Congress of UNESCO Category 1 and 2 Centres of the natural science cycle to be held at the St. Petersburg Mining University in 2024.
